About the Department of Theatre Arts
The University of Iowa Theatre Arts Department is one of the oldest and most respected theatre programs in the country. We offer students the opportunity to earn an undergraduate BA degree, or an MFA degree with an emphasis in acting, directing, design, playwriting, dramaturgy or stage management.
New work and collaboration are the hallmarks of our department. For more than 80 years we have supported the development of new plays by students, faculty and distinguished guests. We recognize that every play, whether new or old, is brought to life through the complex collaborative effort of a writer, director, dramaturg, designers, actors, stage managers and technicians. In order to support this process, we seek to create an atmosphere of passion for the art and generosity of spirit.
Four special programs identify the Theatre Arts Department's commitment to work by contemporary writers:
Partnership in the Arts. Each year the department brings a team of professional artists to create a new work that is presented on the main stage season. The artists are often among America's finest experimental writers and directors. They are in residence for 6-8 weeks and work with students on an ambitious project that often goes on to professional productions elsewhere. Among the artists who have led projects are Anne Bogart, Theodora Skipitares, Erik Eh, Maria Irene Fornes, Rinde Eckart, Migdalia Cruz, Karen Coonrod, Belgrad's Dah Theatre, The Gertrude Stein Repertory Theatre, and James Hatch.
The Iowa New Play Festival. Every spring the department presents a week-long festival of new work written by MFA and undergraduate playwrights. At least five full productions and seven staged readings are presented to an audience that includes six visiting professional writers, dramaturges, directors, producers and actors. All students involved in the Festival have an opportunity to speak with the guests about their work. Several plays have gone on from the Festival to professional productions.
The Iowa Summer Rep. Each summer the Rep presents three major productions by a single playwright. Recent seasons have focused on the work of August Wilson, Tony Kushner, Tom Stoppard, Pearl Cleague, Arthur Miller and others. The Summer Rep is a professional U/RTA company employing Equity actors and stage managers, as well as students who earn points toward their Equity card.
The Guest Artist Program. Each year the department brings at least twenty-five professional artists and scholars to campus to work on productions, lead workshops and teach classes. Some are in residence for a few days, others for a full semester. Click here for a list of recent guest artists.
The University of Iowa has long been a leader in supporting the arts. As a result, our department has a superb faculty dedicated to teaching and to the art of the theatre. We have an excellent facility that includes three theatres and state of the art shops, all on the banks of the Iowa River. We have a close working relationship with the Writers Workshop, the International Writing Program, the School of Music, the Dance Department, and the Art Museum. And Iowa City has long been recognized as a great place for the arts.
